Learn Some Basic Tagalog

Pilipino, or Tagalog as it is also known, is one of the two official languages of the Philippines. The other is English. Tagalog is the language Filipinos mostly use amongst themselves. People feel more at home with their native language whereas English still feels "artificial." To communicate on a personal level, one must use Pilipino although it is often mixed with English.

Examples:

Good morning - Magandang umaga

Good afternoon -
Magandang Hapon

Good evening -
Magandang gabi

How are you, sir/madam? - Kumusta ho kayo?

Goodbye - Paalam

I love you - Mahal Kita

Philippine Wedding Tradition

Gone are the days of "pikot" (shotgun marriage) and "kasunduan" (arranged marriage by parents) where both the bride and groom had no choice but to comply. Traditionally though, even at this day and age, "ligawan" (courtship) still exists. "Harana" (suitor's serenade) use to form part of this ritual but nowadays, it's usually love letters (or emails ;-), flowers, chocolates or simply, dating! But when do they officially become a couple? Decades ago, a girl may be expected to say 'Yes' first just so that the guy would know that she agrees. Nowadays, well...they just know.
After going on steady ("magkasintahan") for quite a time and the couple wants to crossover from being single and get married, then the following are some points to consider:

  • Pagtatapat - the marriage proposal
  • Singsing - the engagement ring
  • Pamanhikan - the asking of the girl's parents' permission to wed the affianced pair
  • Paninilbihan - service rendered by the man to woo the girl's family's approval
  • Pa-alam - wedding announcement - the Filipino way
  • Despedida de Soltera - farewell to spinsterhood
  • Alay ng Itlog kay Sta. Clara - egg offerings to Saint Claire
  • Kumpisal - confession before marriage

Philippine Culture

The Philippines is unique as the only Christian country in Asia, over 90% of the population is Christian. The Spanish did a thorough job. The Philippines has developed a unique mixed culture of foreign influences, mainly Spanish and North American, which can be seen everyday, as even the smallest village square is converted into a basketball court. Ever since US colonial times the country has been crazy about this sport of giants - even though the Filipinos themselves tend to be under tall. During the period of Spanish occupation, Spanish was taught in schools and developed, as the language is still present to-day, in the numerical system and in the Zamboangan language in Chavacano. Spanish was abolished as a compulsory subject in 1968. Since the declaration of total independence from the USA in 1946, English has remained the language of commerce and Politics. Newspapers, TV, Radio, and Government statistics are evidence of this.

The Philippines education system is largely based on the North American model: primary education (elementary schools), secondary education (high schools), and higher education (colleges, universities). School attendance is compulsory for the first four years of the six years elementary school. With an illiteracy rate of only 12% of the population over fifteen, the standard of education is high compared with other developing countries.
